About the CAIP App
The CAIP App aggregates publicly-available data, about patient satisfaction with their GP practice, from the GP Patient Survey (GPPS) and the Friends and Family Test (FFT).
Data
GP Patient Survey
The GP Patient Survey is an independent survey run by Ipsos on behalf of NHS England. The survey is sent out to over two million people across the UK. The results show how people feel about their GP practice. The GP Patient Survey data used in this app is collected from patients aged 16+ registered with a GP practice in England. The data is weighted by age and gender to reflect the population of eligible patients within each practice and ICS.

Friends and Family Test
The Friends and Family Test (FFT) is a feedback tool that asks people if they would recommend the services they have used and offers a range of responses. It was created to help evaluate whether patients are happy with the services provided, or whether improvements are needed. The data in this app reflects the results provided for GP practices which have submitted them, from December 2015 to the present day.

FFT Details & Notes
- FFT was redeveloped in 2018/19, leading to changes to the question/response wording, which were rolled out from April 2020.
- The CAIP App standardizes the responses from the FFT to reflect the new question format, but also includes responses from before the redevelopment.
- Data submission and publication was paused from February 2020, during the response to COVID-19, and was restarted for GP practices from July 2022.
Code
The app is powered by {shiny}
and has been
written in R, using the {golem}
framework for building the app backend, and deployed to Posit Connect.
The data visualisation uses {ggplot2}
, the
tables use {DT}
, and data
transformation relies heavily on {dplyr}
, {tidyr}
, {stringr}
, and {lubridate}
.
